The Brief - Two Rooms Into One

The original layout was unusual — two bathtubs built into a false floor, two separate rooms, and the majority of the piping for the entire house running below the false floor. The brief was to combine the two rooms, create one larger, more functional bathroom, and build it around a 1200mm wide wall-hung vanity with an illuminated mirror above.

The project took two weeks of laboursome work from first-day rip-out to final handover — every aspect weighted equally, because that’s what separates a good bathroom from a stunning one.

Before and After

The before-and-after photos show the extent of the structural change — not just a cosmetic refresh, but a genuine rethink of how the space works.

Strip-Out - False Floor, Two Stud Walls, and a Lot of Pipework

The first stage was ripping the room back to its bare shell, which was no small task. The two original bathtubs were built into a false floor, all of which had to come out. Because the majority of the piping for the entire house ran beneath that false floor, first-fix plumbing wasn’t just the alterations we needed — it meant dropping all the pipework below the original floor level.

On top of that, two stud walls were removed to create a single large room. It’s the kind of job where you need to know what you’re doing, because once the walls come out there’s no hiding mistakes.

Preparing for Tiling - Insulation and Underfloor Heating

Once all the first-fix plumbing and joinery were complete, we prepped the room for tiling. Moisture-resistant plasterboards were used in all wet areas. On the external wall, we used 35mm foam thermal insulating plasterboards to meet building regs and keep the room warm.

The ceiling was then plastered, and self-levelling compound was poured over the underfloor heating ready for the floor tiles to go down.

Tiling - Base and Wedge Levelling, No Voids

As with every project, we used a wedge levelling system to eliminate lippage between tiles. All floor tiles were applied using a back-butter and comb technique — the tile gets adhesive on the back as well as the floor — which guarantees no voids or weak areas.

It’s the kind of detail that doesn’t show up in photos but shows up in how the floor feels underfoot twenty years later. Every project comes with a 2-year guarantee.

The Finished Bathroom

The finished room speaks for itself. The standout features include the huge 2m × 0.9m shower tray with an Aqualisa shower, the beautiful Eastbrook Peretti aluminium radiators, and the 1200mm wall-hung vanity that anchors the whole room.

Making use of such a large space was a challenging but equally rewarding task — the end result gives our clients a bathroom that feels like a proper retreat rather than a functional room.
