Retirement Dream Bathroom Case Study
The Brief - A Retirement Project Worth the Wait
Our client had always wanted her dream bathroom. After retirement, she decided it was time. It was a real pleasure to deliver this one — the kind of project that reminds our team why they do this job.
The design centred on two strong choices: the stunning matt white marble tiles featuring a subtle dark blue inlay (supplied by Mazzanna Tiles), and the indigo blue furniture suite (supplied by Scudo Bathrooms). Get those two elements right and the rest of the room almost designs itself.
Before and After - And What the Client Said
Our client left this review: Stunning Bathrooms were our third estimate. So glad we chose this company. Rodger came and straight away I could see his commitment to providing an excellent service. So thankful for his guidance and advice without influencing my choices. Kirk, Jack and Rob did an amazing transformation. They consulted us on each step of the way. So professional, polite, and hardworking — they did the job in five days. The quality of work is above and beyond our expectations. We really have a beautiful stunning bathroom now. — Mavis & John Lewin.
The Project - Strip-Out and Inspection
This project had only a small amount of tiling in the original bath area and splashback, with exposed floorboards below — which made the strip-out relatively straightforward. But the same process applies to every project: remove the old suite and tiles back to bare brick and plasterboard, then inspect thoroughly before anything new goes in.
We completed all necessary plumbing and electrical work, prepared the walls for tiling, and installed the new ceiling. We always install ceilings before tiling so we can keep the original tile size and cut cleanly at the top of the walls — it leaves a smaller, neater gap for siliconing later.
When Things Don’t Go to Plan - The Shower Tray
On arrival we inspected the shower tray and found a hairline fracture. We couldn’t and wouldn’t install it. Our fitter drove to the supplier personally the next day to pick up a replacement. The last thing we want is to slow down or disrupt our fitting team, so the new tray went in and tiling began the following morning as planned.
It’s the kind of thing that happens on the occasional bathroom renovation. The thing that matters is how quickly it gets sorted.
Tiling - Lippage Control and the Right Grout
To ensure no lippage between tiles, we used our tiling levelling system — it grips tiles from the bottom while pulling them level at the top, giving a perfect 2mm gap between each and every tile.
Once the tiles were set, the clips came out and the tiles were grouted using Kerakoll fugabella grout, a resin cement-based grout that’s a genuine market leader and the only grout we use.
The Finished Bathroom
The finish on this project was perfect. The indigo furniture couldn’t have complemented the marble tiles any better. Three windows let a lot of natural light in, and with the LED mirror and high-gloss ceiling adding reflected light, the bathroom stays bright even on the dullest of days.
Unveiling this project really did bring a strong sense of pride. It’s cliche to say, but it really is the part of the job that means the most: delivering someone the bathroom they’ve always wanted.
