The Brief A Layout Change That Changed Everything

Our client wanted the bathroom layout flipped entirely, with the toilet moving to what was originally the external wall. Normally that wouldn’t be a problem. But with a side extension in the way, there was no straight forward way to run the waste pipe externally to the soil stack.

The only proper solution was to build a stud wall and run the waste internally, across to the only remaining external wall the pipe could exit through. Then we hit the second problem: the conservatory directly in the way of the route the pipe had to take.

Before and After

The before-and-after photos show why this was such a satisfying project to unveil. The original bathroom had a dropped false ceiling and a cramped layout; the finished room is open, bright, and feels significantly larger even though the footprint hasn’t actually changed much.

Solving the Soil Stack Problem

After measuring multiple times, we worked out there was about 7mm of tolerance for the 4-inch pipe between the old wall and the window. Tight, but workable.

The only way to fit the pipe and build a long-term solution was to remove part of the conservatory roof. Easier options existed - replacing the stack only from the roof and below, for instance but if a job’s worth doing, it’s worth doing properly. So we took the roof off, rebuilt the entire stack in plastic pipe (which all new soil pipes are made from), and moved the T-junction so we had enough drop on the run to reposition the toilet.

Strip-Out Back to Bare Brick

While the soil stack work was underway, we ripped the bathroom itself back to bare brick. That dropped false ceiling was one of the first things to go it had been making the room feel smaller than it needed to.

We installed the new stud wall and completed all the copper first-fix plumbing. We only use copper pipe and avoid push-fit fittings wherever possible. Push-fit has its place, but for a 30-year bathroom investment, copper is the right call.

Rebuilding the Room

All new plasterboard went in moisture-resistant as standard, with all wet areas tanked before any tiling. Keeping as much of the ceiling height as possible was a priority, and with the false ceiling gone we had real scope to do that.

Once the soil stack work outside was leak-tested and signed off, we refitted the conservatory roof with a lead slate around the stack to ensure a watertight seal. On the external wall, our Gas Safe plumber moved a gas pipe and we adjusted an electrical outlet for a future outside light.

The Finished Bathroom

The finished room uses wood-effect waterproof panelling something we love, and hope to use again. The natural colours give the space a timeless feel, and the decor tiles break up the room with just the right amount of detail.

The clients were delighted, and we’re proud of how this one came together. The real message of this project: when there’s a will, there’s a way. It just has to be found and then executed properly.
